The Two Types of Eyelid Lift Procedures

by | Sep 1, 2017 | Health

There are a number of different eyelid lifting procedures that are generally performed. Depending on where the biggest problems are, it is done to the upper eyelids, lower lids or both.

Lower Blepharoplasty

Lower blepharoplasty is the most common eyelid procedure because it removes and reduces bags under the eyes, which is the most common. This procedure can be performed in several ways, including transconjunctival blepharoplasty, where an incision is made inside the eyelid and excess tissue and fat is removed, leaving no external and visible scars. The elevation of the lower lid is also performed by incision just below the line of the eyelashes, so that the excess skin can also be removed.

Upper Blepharoplasty

An upper blepharoplasty is done to correct the heavy and droopy eyelids and involves incisions made in the crease of the eyelids in order to eliminate excess skin and the removal of fat and extra tissue in the lids. Sometimes an eyebrow lift will be done in conjunction with eyelid surgery, especially if the forehead increases the amount of droop that occurs with the upper eyelids. An eyelid lift in Chicago is usually performed as an outpatient procedure in the hospital or other surgical facilities. It is performed either with sedation, local anesthesia or general anesthesia.

Recovery from Surgery

Following the prescribed post care is very important in order to ensure a good healing. This usually includes pain medications and antibiotics, the application of ointments to surgical sites, and cold and hot compresses. Patients also must eyes covered with dark glasses to avoid sun and wind damage, and even avoid bending at the waist or doing any activity that raises blood pressure. After surgery, patients may have slight swelling and bruising around the eyes, but this is temporary and will usually disappear within a few weeks. The external incisions around the eyes will leave scars, but these disappear and become very subtle after a certain time and blend into the normal texture of the skin.
