Medical Marijuana, Available in Maryland

by | Jul 31, 2018 | Medicine

Marijuana has been used to treat various ailments for thousands of years. Although 29 states, DC and Guam included, now make medical marijuana available in Maryland, the federal government still has not deemed it effective.

The Medical Benefits of Marijuana

Close to 85 percent of the adult population of the US support the legalization of cannabis. The marijuana extract that is used for medicinal purposes is cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD. Cannabidiol has little or no intoxicating properties. The intoxicant in marijuana is tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. Strains of marijuana grown for medicinal purposes have very little, if any, THC. As such, there is no noticeable alteration in ones consciousness.

Medical cannabis helps in many ways. It tends to relieve insomnia, anxiety, and pain associated with many life-threatening conditions such as cancer and epilepsy. Dravat Syndrome is a childhood form of epilepsy. It is impossible to control with available drugs; however, it does respond favorably to CBD dominant strains of marijuana.

Chronic Pain

Marijuana use has been studied for years as a way to treat chronic pain. Chronic pain affects over 25 million people in the US and is a leading cause of disability. The studies are conclusive; the active ingredients in marijuana that influence receptors in the brain are effective in relieving chronic pain.

Depression

Although marijuana may not be an appropriate treatment for all forms of mental illness, it does relieve depression and the symptoms associated with PTSD. Studies also show that there is evidence that the use of marijuana may alleviate symptoms of anxiety.

Epilepsy

Cannabidiol, an active ingredient in medical marijuana may be effective in easing seizures caused by epilepsy. This is especially true among children that suffer from Dravet Syndrome. Children that have this rare form of epilepsy suffer prolonged and repetitive seizures, which can prove fatal. Tests have shown that cannabis can reduce the number and intensity of seizures.
